Writing Short Stories
Writing a short story is a challenge in and of itself. People will momentarily take it as an easy task; to make a short story. That's right, you don't have to write a novel - and yes, it is brief. You can write tons of short stories and finish them easily. However, to consider good world-building, character development, plot progression, and pacing, you might want to think about it thoroughly. Writing something coherent and cohesive is not easy, especially with few words. And that's exactly why writing a short story is hard.
I was taken aback at how many words I had written. It had, as Hemingway once said, unfortunately, turned into a novel. I feel proud and threatened by the fact that what I've been writing has taken on a greater shape. I feel like this is how it must've felt to raise a child, and most authors have had the same attitude towards their works.
Never have I ever been faced with this reality. I mean, the English language is considered a foreign language in the country where I grew up, so I think my reaction is justifiable. The amalgamation of words and sentences is starting to pull me in, grasp my hand, and guide my fingers through the keyboard to add more to it. Alas, I am happy that I could write a fictional work at this length. I just wanted to write about how scary it is for me to open the draft on my laptop and see all those words. Lurking. Waiting. Eager to be fed.
Do you have the same experience? I would like to hear it from you π.
